DID YOU KNOW that Newport, Rhode Island is home to a Christmas ghost?

In the late 19th century, the Beechwood Mansion was a luxurious mansion, frequented by the elite during the Gilded Age, so the fanciest people of the fanciest time.

One Christmas Eve, a maid named Abigail was found dead in one of the grand halls. Rumors swirled that she had been pushed from the staircase by a jealous lover, though her death was officially ruled an accident. Fancy people in a fancy time rarely get prosecuted.

Anyway, since that fateful night, guests and staff at the Beechwood Mansion have reported strange occurrences every Christmas season. The scent of Abigail's lavender perfume wafts through the air, disembodied footsteps echo through the halls, and lights flicker inexplicably. On Christmas Eve, some claim to see a figure in a maid’s uniform standing silently at the top of the grand staircase, her face hidden in shadow.

Even more unsettling, the Inn's famous Christmas tree, decorated in the main hall each year, has been mysteriously toppled over or stripped of its ornaments, always on the anniversary of Abigail’s death. Locals whisper that Abigail’s restless spirit is seeking justice or perhaps revenge, forever tied to the mansion’s opulent but haunted halls.

The Beechwood Mansion remains a symbol of Newport's golden past, but its eerie Christmas hauntings ensure it will never fully escape its darker history.
